10 x Science Backed Reasons to Exercise Outside

Do it Outside | There is a growing body of scientific research clearly showing that training outdoors brings significant additional benefits when compared to training indoors.

At MoveWell we fully advocate this, less barriers - create your space, build rituals and elevate your movement.  This consistency will lead to better outcomes.

There are a million positive reasons to take your training outside – here are 10 of our favourite science backed reasons;

✅ Improved self esteem and mental health boosts - outdoor exercise appropriately stimulates all five senses in a way indoor training cannot. It has been shown to reduce anger and anxiety, partly due to the increased Vitamin D and increase Serotonin production

✅ Improved Consistency - we know consistency is the most important factor in achieving goals. Training outside has less barriers - it's free and often no commute - step out the door and go. Your mind is focused on fresh things: from the views, changing terrain and gradient, to wind resistance - meaning your more likely to come back for more

✅ Reduced Heart Rate and Blood Pressure verses comparable levels of exertion indoors - meaning exercising outdoors feels less stressful than indoors, as a result you can push performance and ultimately achieve increased gains.

✅ Connecting with Nature - feeling grounded, aware of your surrounding and an enhanced appreciation of our world, vastly reduces stimulation and enables you to tap into a sense we seem to be loosing - 'feeling' the movement.

✅ We can almost guarantee your spending to much time indoors - a recent study by the University of California, Berkeley showed the average Californian only spends 7% of their day outside....this is in California, we can only image what the stats are for the UK 🫣

✅ Improves immunity - a study in the International Journal of Immunopathology found that breathing in small amounts of airborne plant chemicals improves your immune responses by 50%.....that is massive! With the additional benefits of vitamin D, you can guarantee you'll be doing your immunity a favour.

✅ Improves your sleep - getting sunlight and exercise in fresh air is a great prompt for a good nights sleep. More exposure to daylight allows our eyes and skin to absorb the natural light, aligning our bodies with natures circadian rhythm, so our sleep is naturally more rejuvenating and can more efficiently repair cells and recover.

✅ Clarity of thought - being aligned with nature fosters some of our best ideas, reducing distractions and moving your body allowing the mind to ease into a flow state.

✅ Builds resilience - if you are out there, rain or shine, at times you'll be dealing with an additional layer of discomfort, this builds tolerance and can make other challenges in your day dissolve.

✅ It is where you are meant to be.

Hopefully you've dropped your phone and run out the door!
